DENTALEMERGENCY?

Keep Your Child’s Smile Strong

As strong as our teeth may be, most of us succumb to plaque at some point. Nearly all Americans have had at least one cavity in their permanent teeth by the time they reach the age of 20, and baby teeth are particularly susceptible.

There is a common misconception that, since baby teeth are temporary, it isn’t as important to maintain their health. However, baby teeth play an important role in the lifelong health of teeth, and their health must be maintained in order to have a lifetime of healthy teeth. Luckily, if the structure of your child’s teeth are compromised, there are plenty of restorative treatments available.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are treatments used to restore mild to moderate tooth damage. They are most often used to treat cavities, but they can also address minor chipping or fractures. This will be completed in just one quick visit. Our dentist will make sure your child is numb before removing the affected parts of the tooth, filling in the hole with a special material that is then shaped to match the unique shape of your child’s tooth, before it is hardened and sealed.

Baby Tooth Crowns

After an injury or decay leaves your child’s tooth fractured or damaged, a dental crown on top helps restore the tooth while reinforcing its existing structure. When a baby tooth is severely decayed, dental fillings are typically not restorative enough to protect the tooth from further damage. A crown is an inexpensive treatment that protects teeth, provides space maintenance, and are an effective treatment for young children.

Baby Root Canals

When decay reaches the roots of your child’s baby tooth, they may need a baby root canal. This procedure is also called a pulpotomy. During the procedure, the dentist will remove the decayed matter from the center of the tooth. Unlike during a regular root canal procedure, dentists are often able to leave some of the pulp intact, allowing your child to maintain the vitality of their tooth. A dental crown is usually required following a baby root canal. Most often, dentists recommend a stainless steel cap for children.

Children’s Gum Disease Treatment

Though not common in children, pediatric peridontitis, or gum disease, can occur. When bacteria builds up on teeth over time, this can lead to inflammation, pain, and, if left untreated, tooth loss. We specialize in treating gum disease and can help treat your child and install dental implants if needed.
